Western State Colorado University Named Top Military Friendly School
GUNNISON, CO – Victory Media and G.I. Jobs magazine have named Western State Colorado University one of the nation’s top Military Friendly Schools®.
“Inclusion on the 2013 list of Military Friendly Schools shows Western State Colorado University’s commitment to providing a supportive environment for military students,” said Sean Collins, Director for G.I. Jobs and Vice President at Victory Media. “As interest in education grows, we’re thrilled to provide the military community with transparent, world-class resources to assist in their search for schools,” said Sean.
The 2013 Military Friendly Schools list is comprised of the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools that are doing the most to support their student veterans, active duty military members, and the spouses and children of those who have served or are currently serving.
The list of Military Friendly Schools was compiled through extensive research and a data-driven survey of more than 12,000 schools nationwide. Each year schools taking the survey are held to a higher standard than the previous year via improved methodology, criteria and weightings developed with the assistance of an Academic Advisory Board (AAB) consisting of educators from schools across the country.
The 1,739 colleges, universities and trade schools on this year’s list exhibit leading practices in the recruitment and retention of students with military experience. These schools have world-class programs and policies for student support on campus, academic accreditation, credit policies, flexibility, and other services to those who served.
At Western, the Veterans Services Office provides resources for active-duty military members, reservists and members of the National Guard, as well as military veterans and their families.
Western is a participant in the Yellow Ribbon Program, a voluntary program in which the University aligns with the VA to provide additional funding to veteran students through matched contributions. Western proved its commitment to supporting and growing the student veteran population this year when all limitations on funding for the Yellow Ribbon Program were lifted. Western is happy to announce that we now provide an unlimited number of students with an unlimited matching amount for any educational program offered. This program allows for the coverage of the difference between in-state and out-of-state tuition for veterans and dependents attending Western, making our University more accessible and appealing to veterans across the country.
“We are proud to be included on this coveted list,” said Debra Clark, Registrar of Western State Colorado University. “We are dedicated to the success of our Veteran Services program and are eager to continue improving upon the programs and practices that we already have in place. Everyone at Western is honored to be able to support those who have served our country.”
