Free Tax Preparation Assistance Available at WSC

Western State College of Colorado (WSC) is sponsoring the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program to assist taxpayers with completing and filing their federal and state income tax returns.

VITA is an IRS-sponsored, nationwide program. The free program is implemented by WSC accounting and business majors who have completed a basic tax course as well as an IRS training program and certification. The volunteers will prepare returns for taxpayers or review returns that taxpayers have prepared themselves.

Restrictions apply to the types of forms that volunteers can prepare. Acceptable forms include: 1040 (with Schedule A, B, EIC and R); Basic Schedule D (capital gains and losses); Schedule C-EZ (profit or loss from business – expenses less than $5,000); Form 2441 (child and dependent care expenses); Form 8863 (education credits); Form 8812 (additional child tax credit); State Income Tax (all states).

The VITA office is located on the WSC campus in Room 104 of the Borick Business Building on an appointment-only basis. Appointments may be scheduled Monday through Thursday evenings from Feb. 7 through April 11, except for March 14 through March 18.

VITA offers the ability to e-file tax returns, at no cost. In most cases, taxpayers will receive any refund within three weeks.

Please call (970) 943-2019 for more information or to schedule an appointment. There is no charge for this service.
