Forbes Magazine Ranks WSC Among Best Public Colleges

Sept. 15, 2009 -- Western State College of Colorado ranked high in Forbes magazine’s top public colleges and universities list for 2009.

Western came in at No. 30 on Forbes’ list of Top 100 Public Colleges and Universities and ranked 215 overall out of 600 schools on the magazine’s America’s Best Colleges list.

The rankings are based on student satisfaction and success, cost-effectiveness, faculty reputation, and alumni success.

“It’s gratifying to see Western on Forbes’ America’s Best Colleges list. Of course we’ve always known what a unique place Western is, especially with our affordability and our high quality-faculty who are committed to student success. It’s nice to get this kind of recognition on a national scale,” remarked WSC President Jay Helman.

This is the second year that Forbes produced a college ranking list. The magazine partnered with the Center for College Affordability and Productivity (CCAP) to compile information for the rankings on the following criteria: student satisfaction with their course instruction; indicators of post-graduate employment success; the likelihood of graduation from college within four years; estimated average four-year student loan debt; and student and faculty success in winning national and international competitive academic and research awards.

Coming in at the top of the list was West Point Academy. Western came in fifth among the 11 Colorado colleges and universities on the list; US Air Force Academy landed the top spot of the Colorado schools at No. 7 on the overall list.
