Meet the Greatest Mountaineer!
Visit with mountain expedition expert Chhiring Dorje Sherpa. And find out information about travel possibilities to Nepal in the spring!
Chhiring Dorje Sherpa, one of the main players featured in the book, Buried in the Sky, is giving a slide show of several of his 40 climbing expeditions, including the ill-fated 2008 K2 climb, on Monday, December 10th at 7:00 p.m. in the WSCU Center Ballroom.
WSCU has given the nod to recruit students to travel to Nepal this spring and experience a Trek/Climb with Chhiring. This presentation will be the introduction of possible trips, and will give students the opportunity to talk with Chhiring in person.
Buried in the Sky explores the intersecting lives of Chhiring Dorje Sherpa and Pasang Lama, following them from their villages high in the Himalaya to the slums of Kathmandu, across the glaciers of Pakistan to K2 Base Camp. When disaster strikes in the Death Zone, Chhiring finds Pasang stranded on an ice wall, without an axe, waiting to die. The harrowing rescue that follows has become the stuff of mountaineering legend.
Rolwaling Excursion, an adventure company specializing in trekking and expeditions in the Himalayas since 2004, is directed by Chhiring Dorje Sherpa, who began his trekking and expedition career in 1991 at the age 16. He has summited Mt. Everest 11 times, K2 one time (in 2008), Manaslu one time, Cho Oyu five times, Shishapangma two times, Makalu two times, Lhotse one time, Himlung Himal one time, Pumari one time, Amadablam one time and other several 6000m peaks.
A dessert reception will follow Chhiring’s presentation. Copies of the book Buried in the Sky will be available for purchasing and signing.
