If every person had an equal say of where to put society’s waste and polluting industries, where would they be located? The United Nations published the “Universal Declaration of Human Rights,” which declares that all humans have equal rights to life, liberty, and security of person. The environmental justice movement works to ensure these basic rights are upheld. Despite years of resisting polluting industries and technologies, the environmental justice movement still faces many of the same environmental ills it did fifty years ago. Much of the delay can be pointed at insidious doubt, misplaced burden of proof, and absent precautionary practices. When the foundations of a pervasive ideology are shaken, where do we stand? How do we build a healthy and equitable democracy in the 21st century?
“Philosophy Intersections” is a series of informal, interdisciplinary talks designed to understand and appreciate the relationship among the fields of study available at Western.
