The Mountaineer Cyclocross Race will take place over the weekend of Nov. 7th – 8th. In addition to the collegiate championships there will be events for cyclocross racers of all abilities, on both cyclocross and mountain bikes.
The late season planning is because of the nature of cyclocross. According to Tim Curry, a senior at WSC and race organizer, the sport is about testing one’s biking skills in the worst possible conditions. Mike McCarthy, a senior at WSC and another race organizer, added that historically cyclocross has been a way to train when a biker cannot train out on the roads.
The course will be held on ninety percent grass with technical hurdles, staircases, hill runs and fast descents on the WSC campus.
The event is the brainchild of McCarthy and Curry. Both students are exercise and sports science majors and will give all of the proceeds to the Association for Students of Exercise and Sports Science (ASESS) club. ASESS provides funds for WSC students to travel to professional development conferences and to conduct research projects. Curry himself has used the fund to conduct and present a study on the biomechanics of mountain biking. He did this at a regional conference held by the American College of Sports Medicine.
Registration will start Fri. Nov. 6th at Hurst Hall on the WSC campus at 4:00 p.m. The first races will start on 10:00 a.m. on Sat. Nov. 7th. Categories include juniors (under 18), collegiate men and women, open and masters. Prizes will be awarded to the top three competitors in each category.
Sponsors include: Alpine Orthopaedics, Rock n’ Roll Sports, the WSC High Altitude Performance Lab, Tune Up and Sugah’s Cafe.
