In quantum theory, there are many interesting problems which cannot be solved. Computing the exact energy levels associated with an atom as simple as helium is impossible, therefore there is a need for methods that will help us compare different approximations. In this talk, we will look at one such method, the variation method. We will present the mathematical framework needed to understand the derivation of the method, and then demonstrate how the method can be used to systematicaly bound the ground state energy of a system.
