Scholarship Opportunities for Transfer Students

Western State College of Colorado offers a variety of scholarships for new students. Scholarships are awarded based on a student's merit, achievements, involvement and leadership. Some scholarships require an application while others are awarded automatically based on GPA and test scores. You must complete Western's scholarship application unless otherwise noted. The deadline for scholarship applications was April 1st, 2009. Selection is competitive; the number of scholarships available is limited. Some talent-based awards are available in extracurricular activities such as music/theater, art or athletics.

SCHOLARSHIPS FOR NEW NON-RESIDENT TRANSFER STUDENTS:

National Student Scholarship- $3,500 per year, renewable:
The National Scholarship is available to new transfer applicants who are residents of states other than Colorado or WUE states (SEE WUE section above for a list of those states). The National Student Scholarship is valued at $3,500 per year and is renewable for two years. Transfer students must have a 3.0 cumulative GPA or higher in at least 30 semester credits. Transfer students with less than 30 semester credits must also meet the high school requirements of a 3.0 GPA and 20 ACTor 950 SAT scores. Consideration for the National Scholarship is automatic upon acceptance. Students who are awarded status as a Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE) student are not eligible for this award.

Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship- $1,500 per year, renewable:
The Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship is a competitive scholarship worth $1,500 per year and is awarded to accepted junior/community college transfers who are members of Phi Theta Kappa. The award is renewable for two years. Scholarship application is required.

Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE)
The Western Undergraduate Exchange Program (WUE) is available to new students who are residents of the following states Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington and Wyoming. To qualify for WUE status, a new student must be a resident of one of these states, and must apply for need based financial aid by completing the FAFSA form. WUE status is awarded based on the student's financial need. The WUE tuition rate is 150% of full in-state Colorado tuition, as calculated before subtracting the Colorado Opportunity Fund credit granted to Colorado residents.

Eastman Achievement Award in Recreation- $500:
This award seeks to recognize and encourage Outdoor Leadership & Resort Management majors who show diversity and outstanding achievement in the recreation field. Students must have a 3.0 cumulative grade point average and a 21 ACT or 990 SAT. Students must also show a documented commitment to recreation as their major field of study at Western. Applications are sent to all accepted incoming OLRM majors who meet the requirements in the spring. Application form and typed essay addressing at least three of the following areas should be sent to Dr. Kevin Nelson, OLRM Dept., Western State College. Deadline is March 31, 2009. Amount of scholarship is $500. Must show outstanding achievement in at least three of the following five areas:

SCHOLARSHIPS FOR NEW COLORADO RESIDENT TRANSFER STUDENTS:

Western Transfer Award- $1,000 per year, renewable:
The Western Transfer Award is a competitive award valued at $1,000 per year, and is renewable for two years. Transfer students must have achieved a minimum 3.0 cumulative grade point average in 30 semester credit hours of post-secondary college course work. Scholarship application is required.

Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship- $1,500 per year, renewable:
The Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship is a competitive scholarship worth $1,500 awarded to accepted junior/community college transfers who are members of Phi Theta Kappa. The award is renewable for two years. Scholarship application is required.

Ernest Orahood Otero Junior College/WSC Scholarship- Tuition and Fees, renewable:
This scholarship is awarded to a graduate of Otero Junior College who wishes to attend Western as a math or science major. Students must have achieved a 3.0 cumulative grade point average and earned an Associates Degree from Otero Jr. College. Students must also be a graduate of La Junta, Cheraw or Swink High Schools (Rocky Ford, Las Animas, Fowler, Ordway, and Manzanola receive secondary consideration.) The award covers tuition and fees for two years. Applications are available at Otero Junior College Office of Financial Aid. Completed applications will be forwarded from Otero Jr. College to Western State College for selection and notification of award. Deadline is April 1.

SCHOLARSHIPS FOR ALL STUDENTS

Foundation Scholars Program- $4,000 per year, renewable:
The Foundation Scholars Award is a competitive, renewable scholarship valued at $4,000 per year. It can be awarded to any Western student. Four awards are available each year: one for an incoming freshman, and one each for a continuing sophomore, junior, and senior. To apply for the Foundation Scholars Award, a student must have a cumulative 3.5 grade point average. High school applicants must also have a minimum score of 25 on the ACT or 1100 on the SAT. Departmental Scholarships- $250-$500:
Several academic departments at Western State College have awards available to students. These awards are valued from $250 to $500 per year. Please see the Academics page for contact information

Athletic Scholarships- Varying amounts:
Athletic awards are based on a student's athletic performance. The Department of Athletics sets values and requirements for Athletic Scholarships.

Other Scholarships/Common Scholarship- Varying amounts:
Many other scholarships available to all students are combined into the Common Scholarship Application. Requirements for each scholarship are listed in the Scholarship Description section. Scholarship application required. Deadline is April 1.
