Western State College campus falls within the jurisdiction of the City of Gunnison, and as such, is bound by city ordinances pertaining to animal control. Relevant sections and definitions from the applicable ordinances are provided below for your use in providing responsible care for your pet.
Restraint:
No domestic animal shall be permitted in any public place, unless under the control of its owner. Dogs and cats must be kept under restraint at all times; leaving animals tethered does not comply with this provision. Public places include, but are not limited to: public property, parking lots, parks, and schools. Pet owners are responsible for their pets' actions. Animals brought to the Western State College Campus by their owners must comply with these rules and will not be allowed to disrupt classes, to disturb other people or to destroy property.
Adoption:
Any animal not claimed from the City Animal Shelter within three days may be adopted. A $10 adoption fee, license fee (if applicable) and spay/neuter fee is required.
Lost Animals:
Call Gunnison Dispatch at 641-8000 within the City of Gunnison or 349-5231 in Crested Butte immediately upon discovering that your pet is lost. If your pet has been picked up, arrangements can be made for redemption of the animal. If not, someone will be available to aid in identifying your pet and getting it home safely. If your pet has been impounded, you may be responsible for shelter fees and/or court fees. If you find a lost pet, call Dispatch to arrange for placement of the animal in a shelter.
Vaccination:
Vaccination against rabies is required for all dogs and cats six (6) months of age. The vaccination is required every two (2) years and must be administered by a licensed veterinarian.
Licenses:
