Graduation Information

Graduation Requirements

Graduation is not automatic, it is a process.  To best assist students in their progress towards receiving a degree, all students must complete a Graduation Update with their faculty advisor when they are enrolled in their 89th credit hour.  Things to keep in mind when filling out Major and General Education checksheets include:

  • Major and General Education checksheets must be from the same catalog year.  A student may not work out of two catalogs.  That being said, students may only work from catalog years of which they had attendance.
  • Students may choose to ‘update’ their catalog should newer curriculum better fit courses they’ve taken, degree plans, etc.  (Again major & GE must both be updated.)
  • Advisor(s) must sign and turn in completed checksheets to Taylor 201.
  • Students with more than one major must complete a checksheet for each major, which then must be signed by a major specific advisor.
  • Any incomplete updates received by this office (missing GE, signatures, etc) will not be reviewed until all of the necessary information is provided.
  • Once a graduation update has been initially reviewed by the Registrar two copies will be sent to the advisor, one for the student and one for the advisor’s records, at which time it is expected that the student visit with their advisor to retrieve their copy and go over the evaluation to plan their final semester(s) accordingly.

Finally, during the first three weeks of a pending graduate’s final semester, he/she must submit an Application for GraduationThis step is critical for graduation.  Up until a student completes this step, he/she has not indicated any specified intention of finishing his/her degree.

Commencement
Graduation

The culmination of years of hard work and dedication, all lead up to the big day.  This Fall's commencement will be held on December 19th, 2009 at 10:00am in the Paul Wright Gymnasuim.  Friends and family are all welcome to attend the ceremony, as this semester's graduates set off into a new chapter of their lives.

Guests are encouraged to explore the commencement FAQs as they make preparations to visit the Gunnison valley to attend the celebration.  Prior to graduation, a senior reception will be held on Friday, December 18th at 5:00pm in the Aspinall-Wison Center.  This event is an opportunity for Western State College to recognize graduates for their acheivements and provides family and friends a chance to mingle with faculty and staff.

**Graduates!  Please be mindful of critical deadlines pertaining to graduation.  Missing applicable deadlines may have an adverse impact on your eligibility to participate in commencement.  Any questions or concerns should be directed to Ginny Hayes, available in Taylor Hall 201 or by calling 970-943-2130.
