ROE Professor Mark Gibson will be leading the Spring Semester 2012 CORE Program!  The CORE Team (www.western.edu/academics/recreation/field-semester) will start the season working with the Adaptive Sports Center in Crested Butte (www.adaptivesports.org) in their volunteer program and will undergo a series of trainings along with being placed in apprenticeship roles with the Adaptive Staff.   You can track the CORE 2012 Team on Facebook:

The CORE Team will be spending Friday, Saturday, and Sunday with Crested Butte Mountain Guides getting their Avalanche Level 1 Certifications. This will allow us to travel as a group into the backcountry using their newly acquired skills to make more educated decisions for safe backcountry travel. After the class, hopefully, a Beacon, Shovel, and Probe will be standard gear for backcountry skiing. ROE Professor Matt Ebbott would like to announce the following programs in the works for Western State Colorado University Students!

“In the works for Summer of 2013, an expedition to Kenya and Tanzania, Africa, where we will study Outdoor Leadership and Eco Tourism. We’ll lodge at Outward Bound Kenya, Climb Mt. Kilimanjaro, do service projects in African villages, and go on Safari!”

I’m also working on an ENVS camp for summer 2012 – “Environmental Leadership Camp, July 8-13th in Gunnison Colorado, where high school students interested in Environmental challenges, issues and leadership to create positive change will study with Environmental Studies faculty, create Action Plans for their homes, schools and communities, and raft, bike, climb and hike around the Gunnison Valley”
