Scholarships
There are five scholarships for which Environmental Studies students may be eligible in addition to the wide range of scholarships administered by the Office of Financial Aid .
Mike Martin Memorial Scholarship
One award may be made each year to a full-time, Colorado native, Environmental Studies major from Crested Butte, Gunnison, or elsewhere in Colorado in honor of Mike Martin, Crested Butte environmentalist and recreation enthusiast.
Amount: One $300-500 scholarship (depending on funds availability); disbursed over two semesters.
Eligibility Criteria: Full-time enrollment status, having grown up in Crested Butte, Gunnison, or elsewhere in Colorado (applications will be ranked according to this order); GPA of 3.0 or higher.
Application: Complete and submit the Environmental Studies Scholarship Application Form (New ENVS Application Form) to the Director of Environmental Studies by April 1. Recipient will be notified by e-mail and is expected to be present at the Fall Forum when the award is announced.
Nauman Environmental Studies Scholarship
Awarded each year to an applicant who has been accepted for admission to Western State Colorado University with a declared interest in pursuing a degree in Environmental Studies. Preference will be given to entering first year students with financial need, however other first time students may be considered.
Amount: One $500.00 scholarship; disbursed over two semesters.
Application: Complete and submit the Environmental Studies Scholarship Application Form (New ENVS Application Form) to the Director of Environmental Studies by April 1. Recipient will be notified by e-mail and is expected to be present at the Fall Forum when the award is announced.
Nauman Environmental Stewardship Award
One award may be made each year to a full-time Environmental Studies major in recognition of his or her contribution towards environment stewardship while at Western State Colorado University. Applicants must demonstrate academic achievement and consistent progress towards completion of the Environmental Studies major.
Amount: One $500.00 scholarship; disbursed over two semesters.
Application: Complete and submit the Environmental Studies Scholarship Application Form (New ENVS application form) to the Director of Environmental Studies by April 1.
Recipient will be notified by e-mail and is expected to be present at the Fall Forum when the award is announced.
The Dee and Jim Mahaffey Environmental Scholarship
Awarded to the student who best embodies the balanced life uniquely available to Western State Colorado University students. Each year, this scholarship seeks a student whose lifestyle combines academic excellence, sustainability, and passion for the mountain environments of the Gunnison Valley.
Amount: $1000 scholarship; disbursed over two semesters.
Application: Rather than a formal application process, recipients will be nominated and selected by the Environmental Studies Faculty Council. Preference given to upcoming Sophomores and Juniors majoring in Environmental Studies.
Recipient will be notified by e-mail and is expected to be present at the Fall Forum when the award is announced.
Joseph A. Kastellic Scholarship
One award may be made each year ($250 each semester) in honor of Joseph A. Kastellic, a career National Park Service employee, and first Superintendent of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Monument.
Eligibility Criteria: Full-time enrollment status, successful completion of two full years of study, a declared major in geology, environmental studies, or environmental biology, a minimum GPA of 3.0. Preference may be given to students who have expressed a career interest in park operations and/or management, those with financial need, and students from Colorado's "Western Slope."
Application: Complete and return the Common Scholarship Application by April 1, along with a short essay describing your career goals.
Selected by: Barbara J. Kastellic and the Black Canyon Kiwanis, in consultation with the Office of Financial Aid.
