Admission Checklist

for Master of Arts Degree in Education

IMPORTANT: Students must complete ALL requirements for the chosen licensure track before being formally admitted to the Master of Arts Degree in Education Program.

Please complete all steps for admission simultaneously.

All Master of Art students must determine the licensure track that works best for their situation – Internship or Alternative.

If choosing the Internship Tract:  NOTE: it could take up to 14 weeks for your fingerprints to clear

    1. complete the Colorado Department of Education Fingerprint Check; NOTE: it could take up to 14 weeks for your fingerprints to clear *As of March 6, 2013, CBI is backed up on fingerprint clearance, by 5 months. This means it can take up to 5 months to clear your prints, from the day to submit them.*
    2. review the required collegiate coursework requirements by endorsement areas AND/OR;
    3. pass the Content Tests for endorsement area by July;
    4. meet admission degree overall GPA requirement of 3.0
    5. complete the Western State Colorado University Graduate School Application  (Note: Transcript and Reference Requirement);
    6. complete the Master of Arts in Education Application.

If choosing the Alternative Licensure Track:

Also note that employment as an alternative teacher or principal and/or participation in an alternative preparation program prior to issuance of a Statement of Eligibility will NOT be accepted for purposes of program completion and preparation for initial licensure. 

The background check (fingerprints) must be cleared and the application approved before a candidate is placed in a k12 classroom or begins a licensure program.  

    1. complete the Colorado Department of Education (CDE) Alternative License Application;
    2. review the required collegiate coursework requirements by endorsement areas AND/OR;
    3. pass the Content Test for endorsement area by July;
    4. meet admission degree overall GPA requirement of 3.0
    5. complete the Western State Colorado University Graduate School Application (Note: Transcript and Reference Requirement);
    6. complete the Master of Arts in Education Application. 

Added Endorsement

All Master of Arts students must determine the licensure tract that works best for their situation - to add or not to add an endorsement as part of the degree.

If choosing the Added Endorsement Track:

    1. review the required collegiate coursework requirements by endorsement areas AND/OR;
    2. pass the Content Test for endorsement area by July;
    3. meet admission degree overall GPA requirement of 3.0
    4. complete the Western State Colorado University Graduate School Application  (Note: Transcript and Reference Requirement);
    5. complete the Master of Arts in Education Application.
